British Mini Rex Club
DofE Approved Activity Provider
On 1st June 2019 the British Mini Rex Club was registered as an Approved Activity Provider for the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. This is an exciting new venture. Juniors can now get official recognition by the DofE for the work they do within the Fancy and wider community with their rabbits as they work towards their Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.
How it all began… As with anything, it starts with a single thought driving to and from one of our committee meetings. One of the recent topics we discussed at a committee meeting had been thinking about how we can further engage our Juniors and more specifically, how the ‘keeping of Mini Rex’ could be extended to Juniors who maybe do not have rabbits. Whilst we have our senior school at Ardingly College with Kate Evans (BMRC School Liaison Officer) as our link, moving forward, how could we extend this? Ann Preece decided to go hunting in her loft where she discovered her beautiful notebook from when she completed the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award; lo and behold, a beautiful notebook with detailed descriptions and illustrations appeared. And so from these humble ideas a dream was born! Many people know of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, but how could this be extended into rabbit showing, keeping or active involvement at rabbit shows. Many young people can get involved in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award by using existing frameworks to support their chosen activities and achieving goals set by an assessor with the regular monitoring of progress over a period of time. This in itself is fantastic but we, as a club, wanted to be able to create and develop our own rabbit-based section. As soon as we decided to approach the DofE officially, long discussions and various consultations followed with the approval team at the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. Finally, in June 2019 the British Mini Rex Club became a registered Approved Activity Provider for both the Skills and Volunteering Sections and we are now listed on the official DofE website with our club information, contact details and website link. What does this mean in real terms? It means that young people can work through their Volunteering Section and Skills Section of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, by keeping, breeding and exhibiting rabbits and/or volunteering to be involved in rabbit shows. When creating our specific framework within the official section, it was important to us that all four sections would be appealing and could be completed by Juniors who were active within the Fancy and to those who had no connection to the rabbit world. With this in mind, four interconnected BMRC frameworks were created: THREE are tailored in the ‘Skills Section’ and ONE in the ‘Volunteering Section’. In summary, two of the sections were designed specifically to be easily undertaken by young people who do not keep rabbits but who are interested and want to be involved in this area as part of their Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, and two sections are more suited to our Juniors who are already involved in the Fancy. Our four distinct areas were approved and the British Mini Rex Club is now officially registered as a Duke of Edinburgh Activity Provider, which in essence means that, with the correct evidence and development, Juniors can get official recognition by the DofE for the work they do within the Fancy and wider community with their rabbits as they work towards their Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. |
